Mum's United Challenge :: Week Four & a Big $350 Giveaway!

For the life of me I could have sworn I wrote an update of week thee. Apparently not! Week three was much the same as week four - we went out for walks & bike rides when we could. Melbourne's weather has been really fickle these last few weeks, we go from a day of sun to a day of pouring rain. Lots of little froggies out & about in our area! Just last week, driving home from work one night I was dodging frogs in the rain & the next day I was dodging lizards basking in the sun in the middle of the road! Go figure!

We made a few tasty treats from the Mums United website - we made the Banana & Blueberry Loaf again, yummy Banana Pikelets & Beef & Vegetable Skewers. I'll keep going back to the Heart Foundation recipes because there are so many more that look very very tasty!

Ok, now that the four week challenge is over, how did we go? I was hoping we would get to do more outdoor activities but Melbourne's weather was against us. That didn't stop us from doing what we've always done when stuck indoors - dance around like maniacs for a few songs everyday & the girls ride their bikes under the pergola when it was raining. With all the housework I've been doing(thank you messy children!) I'm going to count that as my exercise! We're going to continue with the family using light milk & light cheese. No one could tell the difference & now that the girls are over two years of age it's ok for them to eat low fat dairy. It's safe to say we will continue to get out more as a family for walks & bike rides so we've formed some good habits.

And now I have a little something for you! Thanks to the Heart Foundation, Mums United & Soup I have three Coles Myer gift cards to give away to you my lovely followers - a $50 gift card, $100 gift card & a big fat $200 gift card! So, what do you ave to do to in one of these prizes? Well here's what you need to do:

I'll then sort through the comments(I hope that there are a few!) & pick three winners!

Good luck! I look forward to reading your comments & getting some ideas from you guys!

Hi, I just found your blog and followed via Google friend connect.

Healthier lifestyle? I try to eat food that has been as little processed as possible. For me that means fruit salad for breakfast and for my boys very plain cereal and home cooked meals where possible.

I also kick them outside away from all screens as often as I can. If only I would do the same for me :D

Ok, 2011 is about embracing a healthier lifestyle for me. I'm not necessarily winning in all aspects but I'm trying really hard!
I've joined the gym, but I've also purchased a bike.
I plan on going on bike rides with my two older kids, they're really excited about it, because not only will it help me get out in the fresh air and exercise, I'll be spending quality time with my kids too. They're mighty impressed.

A healthier lifestyle for myself??? Being a mum of two I tend to forget about myself most of the time and focus mainly on making sure the kids are eating right and getting enough fresh air and outdoor play! I have however, cut out drinking coffee and the slab of coke I would drink in a week! It's a small start, but a start nonetheless!

I have a 2 year old who never stops getting in to mischief, so I'm constantly running after her. However, to make sure myself and my family are living a healthy lifestyle, I always make sure we have healthy food stocked in the cupboards. We snack on fruit and nuts, instead of processed foods, and I cook 99% of our meals. I make sure our meals are low in salt and fat.
Also, my husband and I are quite active. He cycles to work every day and I go to the gym in the morning (my daughter goes to the creche at the gym!). I'm always looking for new ways to keep us living healthily and happily!

I'm following via GFC as Jasmine1485 :)

I exercise everyday, unless I'm actively ill of course! It's not always for a long time but I've made it a habit now so it feels odd if I don't do my exercise. Some days I walk, some days I do pilates from a set of cards, some days I do Zumba on the Wii, but it's always something. :)

We also use low fat milk and cheese and I don't actually like the flavour of full fat milk anymore! I have vegetables every night with tea, and I try to have them at lunch too. I even grow herbs and vegies on my balcony. I eat my homemade yoghurt (plenty of calcium, plus it's tasty!) and cook as much as I can from scratch so I know what's in it.

Finally, I try my best to get enough sleep, I know sometimes it's difficult but I make it a priority because I know how much better I feel on adequate sleep!

Ha! a healthier lifestyle would probably mean I have to get off my rear end and have some time away from the computer. I have been trying to have a mini digital detox every once in a while because i find that I'm easily overloaded with too much information. I'm going to try and let my brain switch off for a little bit every week and enjoy spending that time with Emma.
will share this post with my fb fans

I have recently embarked on the journey of a breast reduction to allow me the physical life I want. We have begun growing our own vegetables and even abandoned the car on weekends and walk everywhere instead. We are planning for a much healthier 2012 xxx Bring it on ...

In my house we are currently reducing our intake of processed foods and i have noticed a HUGE reduction in our food bill which is also great. I enjoy watching my kids eat something that i have made myself as i know exactly what is in it.
I want to be like you when i grow up Tash, I think you are a wonderful mum!

I find that visiting my local meat market (no Natasha an actual meat market - I looked for a RL footballers market but there wasn't one to be found! lol) I buy my meat first in bulk(saving loads $) then take it home to meal plan. I then write a list of what is needed and head to the supermarket buying only what is on the list! I try not to buy those cheeky little extras that are unhealthy as if they aren't in the house at night when I crave it we can't eat it! Buying lots of fruit is always good as I chop it up for afternoon tea rather then letting the kids go for something high in sugar, salt, fat and who knows what else!?

I have also started bootcamp and I am loving it! This not only helps me become happier and healthier but also the kids see me doing exercise and show me how they exercise too.

We have started an aquaponics system in our backyard late this year which has encouraged a healthier more sustainable lifestyle for not only hubby, our children and I but it is filtering through to our extended family too :D

It's a struggle, this trying to be healthy, but I'm sure it's worth it. For me it's portion size, carb quality & excercise. Lately I think mental health is also part of the bigger picture of 'being healthy' - take time to laugh, relax, & spend time with my loved ones. And try try try for quality time to myself!

I think it is really important to be mentally and physically healthy!

In order to lead a healthier lifenjoyestyle I do lots of walking with bubs (which we both); always make sure I share a healthy meal with my husband at dinner time where we get time to catch up on the days activities; and laugh and have fun with my friends and family!

Planting a veggie & herb garden so we can produce our own food as much as possible. Yum. The kids love to see things grow & harvest them too. Not many snow or sugar snap peas have made it to the kitchen yet though as they get gobbled up by the girls on the way. Brilliant!
Next step is setting up a chook run...

For my kids, it's about eating the least packaged foods possible. I have one lactose intolerant, gluten-free twin who demands to eat what his sisters are eating, so it's just easier to make things from scratch, lest he notice a difference in packaging between his gluten-free, dairy-free snack and the girls' normal stuff.

I'm also all about covert and stealth vegetable manouvres. Every single dinner has at least 5-7 different veg. Especially the green stuff. My oldest is "allergic to broccoli" (self diagnosed...possibly with the assistance of Google Doctor), so I have to hide it from her. The twins, thankfully, eat anything. Even non-food items, but that's a whole other story...

Reducing TV and being active is the physical side of our healthier lifestyle. That one hurts hubby, as there's always some sport on that he simply can't miss. I admit, I get great enjoyment out of switching the TV off and watching his pained expression!

For my own personal health and wellbeing, I consume wine. What? Red wine is known to be good for you. And it makes Mummy much less stressed. Seriously, if I have to get a Doctor's letter to justify it, I will, heh.
